IOT for Communities
The IOT for Communities projects is a long-term collaboration between local communities, the Ministry of Resource Development and Information Technology, Politeknik Kota Kinabalu and Kinabalu Coders to implement LoRaWAN-based IOT (Internet of Things) sensor networks with urban and rural coverage. Each gateway is registered and shared via The Things Network (TTN) - a global distributed network of public gateways, enabling other developers/makers to re-use the available infrastructure for their own IOT devices.
Milestones
- December 2017 - Pilot @ SMK Pulau Gaya
- Jan 2018 - Second TTN gateway at the KK Makerspace

It attracts participants from the entire local maker ecosystem ranging from individuals, startups, social enterprises, NGOs and established businesses engaged in such diverse fields such as computing, robotics, electronics, creative arts, film production, upcycling and more!
Drones & ROV Challenge
The first Sabah MultiGP Drone Racing Competition and the Underwater Robotics Challenge was held concurrently in December 2017, jointly organised with Kelab Dron Sabah (Sabah Drone Club) and Politeknik Kota Kinabalu. Competitors in both events had to assemble their drones/ROVs and compete in a series of timed tasks. For drones, the competition saw two separate categories: professionals and amateurs, with teams hailing from as far as Kuala Lumpur, Sarawak and Brunei - making the first Sabah MultiGP Drone Racing Competition also an international drone racing competition!
